Reinstalling Windows without opening your laptop

A plain-language walkthrough of a software-only Windows reinstall — what we back up, what we install, and why your laptop is never opened.

A slow, crashing or unbootable laptop does not always need a technician with a screwdriver. Most Windows problems live in software, and they can be fixed in software. Here is exactly what a VERNEX Windows reinstall looks like — and what it does not involve.

Why the laptop never needs to be opened

Every modern laptop can start from a USB drive through its own boot menu. That is all a clean Windows install needs: a properly prepared installer, the right settings in the firmware (BIOS/UEFI), and time. The case stays closed, no seals or warranty stickers are touched, and no internal parts are removed or swapped.

If the fault turns out to be hardware — a failing drive, a bad charging port, a damaged screen — we tell you so, and we tell you what it needs. We do not guess, and we do not open it.

The steps, in order

  1. Check first. We look at what is actually wrong: boot errors, blue screens, a full disk, malware or just years of clutter. Sometimes a repair is enough and a reinstall is not needed at all.
  2. Back up. Documents, photos, desktop files and browser bookmarks are copied off before anything is erased. We always ask what matters to you — some things only you know about.
  3. Install Windows cleanly. A fresh, genuine copy of Windows from Microsoft’s own installer, on a correctly prepared drive.
  4. Drivers and updates. Wi-Fi, sound, display and touchpad drivers from the manufacturer, then Windows Update until it is fully current.
  5. Essential software. A browser, a PDF reader, a media player and the programs you use for work — installed and ready.
  6. Restore and hand over. Your files go back where you expect them, and we walk you through anything that looks different.

What to do before you hand it over

  • Write down the passwords you will need afterwards — email, Microsoft account, Wi-Fi.
  • Tell us about any software you paid for, so the licence keys can be found before the reinstall.
  • If you use cloud storage such as Google Drive or OneDrive, make sure it has finished syncing.

How long does it take?

Most reinstalls are finished the same day. A very large backup, or a slow connection for the updates, can push it to the next day — you will know which before we start.

A note on licences. We only install genuine software. If your laptop came with Windows, the licence is usually stored in the device itself and activates again automatically.
